Which DPI Should You Use?
The right DPI depends on where and how the design will be used.
72 DPI
Often associated with older screen and web workflows. It may be used for basic digital graphics, but it is generally not suitable for detailed printing.
96 DPI
A common reference point for CSS and screen-size estimates. Modern devices can have different physical pixel densities, so 96 DPI should not be treated as a universal print setting.
150 DPI
A practical option for many home prints, larger graphics, and images viewed from a normal distance. It may also suit some print-on-demand products, depending on the provider’s requirements.
300 DPI
A common target for high-quality flyers, brochures, photo prints, business cards, magazines, and professional print artwork. However, not every printer requires exactly 300 DPI, so always check the print specification.
600 DPI
Useful for detailed line art, small printed text, technical graphics, or specialist printing. It creates much larger files and is not necessary for every project.
DPI vs. PPI: What Is the Difference?
DPI means dots per inch and is usually used when discussing printers. PPI means pixels per inch and is more often used for digital image resolution.
In everyday design work, people often use the terms interchangeably when calculating the pixel dimensions required for a print. The important part is using the DPI or PPI requested by your printer, marketplace, client, or publishing platform.
Why Inches Do Not Have a Fixed Pixel Size
An inch does not always equal the same number of pixels. The pixel result changes depending on the selected DPI or PPI.
For example:
- 1 inch at 96 DPI = 96 pixels
- 1 inch at 150 DPI = 150 pixels
- 1 inch at 300 DPI = 300 pixels
- 1 inch at 600 DPI = 600 pixels
That is why a design made for an 8 × 10-inch print can require 768 × 960 pixels at 96 DPI but 2400 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI.
Before You Export or Print
Before sending a file to print, confirm the required dimensions, resolution, color mode, bleed, and file format with the print shop or platform. A 300 DPI image may be suitable for many print jobs, but the best setting always depends on the product and provider requirements.
